Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert
Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

Played new and old tunes, rocked the OLG theatre! Had good seats but wish I had gotten even closer
This is our first Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit concert....it met and exceeded expectations, great band, Jason's music, lyrics, voice and guitar playing were all star. Courtney Marie Andrews was a great addition as opening act.
Jason Isbell put on a fantastic show as usual, have seen him 3 times now and this show was our favourite! Wonderful venue as well!
One of the world's greatest songwriters and his band put on an incredible show at the OLG Stage on June 23rd. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's concert focused mostly on songs from the Grammy award winning album Weathervanes which was released in 2023. However, the band also performed songs from Isbell's impressive catalogue, including Alabama Pines from 2011's Here We Rest. The OLG Stage is a new venue with great sightlines and even better sound. All in all, a great night of music in a great performance hall.
Fabulous music in a terrific venue. Jason Isbell and 400 Unit didn’t disappoint.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are incredible to watch live. They have perfected their Art and sound incredible! Jason Isbell is a songwriting genius and his music is perfectly structured. Not only is his songwriting uncanny, he’s also a guitar virtuoso. They gave a flawless performance and it’s the best concert I’ve ever been to.
One of the best live bands around! Great music, impressive venue - thoroughly enjoyed it.
The title says it all. I enjoyed the band plenty prior to the show, but didn’t fully appreciate the musicianship of all the band members. Jason Isbell is not only an incredible songwriter but the man shreds the guitar. I went back to the merch table afterwards because the show changed my mind.
Biased, of course, but this band is just so good in every which way. Amazing musicians. And add in the best songwriter in music today and you just have two hours well spent, every single time. The venue was excellent as well.
Jason Isbell AND the 400 Unit were each and separately worth twice the ticket price. Kathleen Edwards was her usual spectacular self. The Jube sound tech struggled with Kathleen for most of her show but was able to recover.
Kathleerecebn Edwards and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit put on a fabulous show at the Queen Elizabeth theater on this March Sunday. The sound for both sets was excellent, the musicianship and songwriting were perfection. The theater seats at the Queen E are pretty comfortable, but I still found myself shifting my butt around by the end of the night. The only reason this event didn't get a 5 star review from me is the recent concert trend of spotlights directed toward the audience. I found myself having to shield my eyes on several occasions from the blinding lights emanating from the rear of the stage. I really wish concert halls would go back to the good old days where the performers were the only people illuminated during the concert. I'm OK with the house lights coming up from time to time to show the audience, but I hate being the one in the spotlight.
The music was outstanding but the lights were a disaster. Never before have I had to put my hand in front of my face to block the lights that shone from the stage. For a concert event where serious dollars were outlaid and resources were put in place to attend a concert at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, this is unacceptable. The saving grace was a great show by Jason Isbell and Kathleen Edwards as opening act. The openers had no lights trained on the audience, The performers delivered a more pleasant overall concert experience where no hands had to be held in front of face to shield from the lighting.
One of the best shows I’ve seen in years….Jason and his incredible band played an amazing set that rocked hard and hit your heartstrings. Not ashamed to say so she’s a couple tears. hopefully we don’t have to wait another 12 years for another gig!
We thoroughly enjoyed the concert! Awesome performance ~ can’t wait to see them again!
Music and sound were great. Lighting was lousy. Forward facing spots blinding to the audience and left us unable to see the band.
Jason and his band delivered! Great concert. Vocals were a bit fuzzy at this venue - not very clear. Perhaps something to do with how the audio was set up?
Excellent concert! Musically they are very tight. The sound and skill of Mr. Isbell and the band is top notch. The only thing missing was Amanda Shires on fiddle.
Jason Isbell and the band put on a show to remember in Vancouver, his voice has never been stronger and the band never tighter. After seeing him numerous times he just keeps getting better
Thank you for coming back to Vancouver - and being able to share your soul with us. Quotable moment was “some people think I’m a country singer, but I write almost all of my songs.” If We Were Vampires was perfect encore song, as it’s one of our favourites. (I love the story of writing the song and lyrics) Kathleen was fantastic as well. Keep writing and come back soon please!
I've seen Isbell and the 400 unit more than a dozen times over the years and this is the most polished they've ever been. I kinda prefer them louder and rougher, but there is no denying their virtuosity. Kathleen Edwards was the perfect SG and I wish she had more stage time. Fabulous show all round.
